staff. Engineering professionals have become intimately
involved in many aspects of medicine, and the
discipline of “Bio-medical engineering”
has become firmly established of the integration
between the two disciplines of Medicine and Electronic
Engineering.
Bio-medical engineering uses engineering principles
to enable us to understand, modify or control
biological systems. It is an inter-disciplinary
and applied branch of electronic engineering,
which also requires a working knowledge such
as physiology, anatomy and biological sciences.
In practice, it involves everything from equipment
for diagnosis and patient monitoring through
implants such as pacemakers, artificial joints
and limbs to the computer simulation of biological
functions. All these modern aids to healthcare
have to be conceived, designed, tested, manufactured,
installed, operated, maintained and improved.
This is the job of bio-medical engineers.
The world market for all bio-medial devices,
including diagnostic and therapeutic equipment,
is in the range of $ 100 billion/year. It is
destined to grow even further, especially in
areas that have aging populations. Bio-medical
engineers will be of increasing importance to
this growth.
The objective of this program, therefore,
is to produce Bio-Medical Engineers of international
standards. This could best be achieved by training
students of two Universities i.e. an Engineering
University and a Medical University. Thus collaboration
between Mehran University of Engineering and
Technology and Baqai Medical University, Karachi
was planned.
The B.E (Bio-Medical Engineering) program
is divided into eight semesters. The requirement
for the degree is 155 credit hours.
