construction and operation and maintenance of
structures such as buildings, roads, bridges,
railways, factories, airports, irrigation schemes,
docks, harbours, sea defences, flood control systems,
water supply, sewerage disposal, etc. Thus, civil
engineering is probably the largest and broadest
discipline of engineering fields.
The Department of Civil Engineering provides
engineering education as per the requirements
and needs of the fields and structures mentioned
above. Some degree of specialization is also
introduced in the final year designing and completing
the projects; which may be specific to a particular
branch of civil engineering.
The department teaches many courses relevant
to vast field of civil engineering including
Applied Mechanics, Surveying, Fluid Mechanics
and Hydraulics, Irrigation Systems, Soil Mechanics,
Engineering Construction and Structures, Environment
Engineering and other related subjects. Theory
classes of different subjects are complemented
by tutorials and laboratory work for which adequate
facilities and equipment have been established.
In addition, the students are taken to many
sites such as barrages and irrigation systems,
road construction works, drainage schemes, etc.,
to expose them to practical work being actually
implemented.
The Department also offers postgraduate courses
leading to degrees such as Post-graduate Diploma
(P.G.D.), Master of Civil Engineering (M.C.E.),
Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of
Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the following fields.
Hydraulics and Irrigation
Structures
Public Health
Geo Technical Engineering
Recently, the department has set up a Software
Laboratory which provides computing facility
using application Software in Civil Engineering.
