Mechanical Engineering applies the knowledge of Physics and other sciences to the design, manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of all types of equipment and machinery, which may be used for generation of

power, manufacture of many other devices/machines and processing of materials and goods.The department of Mechanical Engineering offers the degree course titled “Bachelor of Engineering, Mechanical”, which includes technical knowledge concerning materials and production processes, thermodynamics and its applications, mechanics and mechanisms, economics and industrial engineering and management. In addition, a number of other subjects including Mathematics, Humanities and Statistics are also taught to the students to give them a broader vision of engineering and allied analytical methods. In the final year, a project is also given to the students which involves design, manufacture, research and testing of some new device or process.

The theory classes of many subjects are supplemented by tutorials and practical work in laboratories and workshop; for which adequate facilities and equipment has been installed and is being used. The laboratories are especially available for the subjects of thermodynamics and heat engines, heat transfer, materials testing, mechanisms and machine parts and refrigeration and air-conditioning. The Mechanical Workshop also includes facilities for training in machining, fitting, forging, foundry, welding, electric connections and wood working. The training in workshop is not confirmed to the students of Mechanical Engineering only. Students of other departments also undergo training in the workshop.

The department also offers Postgraduate Diploma (P.G.D.) and Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Manufacturing Systems which is usually conducted as a part-time course in the evenings.
