chromium
and precious stones.
The
undergraduate course was started in 1981 to
meet the need for qualified engineers in the
field and to participate in the mammoth task
of exploitation of these minerals. Accordingly,
the four-year course leading to the degree of
“Bachelor of Engineering, Mining” includes subjects
such as mining methods, mineralogy and petrology,
mineral dressing, mine plant, rock penetration
and mine management. Adequate number of laboratories
has also been established to support the lectures.
These laboratories include machinery for rock
mechanics and mineral processing, mine ventilation
and surveying. A computer laboratory has also
been established for the use of faculty and
as well as the students. Significant liaison
with the mining industry has also been established
and the students are sent for field visits to
the mine sites in order to expose them to the
real situation.
During
the final year the students are given a research/investigation
project to impart them additional practical
training and techniques of report writing. The
bachelor’s degree in mining is awarded when
the students fulfil all the requirements and
pass the examinations.
