Considering the fact that Pakistan, especially the province of Sindh, is very rich in oil and gas; a separate department of Fuel Engineering was first established in 1983; later on therecommendation of Accreditation

Committee of the University GrantsCommission, the Department was changed to the Department of Petroleum & Gas Engineering.

In recent years, Petroleum Engineering has gained considerable importance due to the vital role of oil in every segment of life. In line with this progress, research and development activities in Pakistan have gathered momentum during last decade. In 1996 this department was up-graded to Institute of Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering, encouraging the postgraduate studies and research to meet the need for qualified manpower in this field.

The curriculum includes courses in reservoir analysis, drilling techniques, production techniques, processing, transmission, distribution, storage and economics of oil and gas. Additional subjects such as geology, computer applications & programming, mathematics are also included in the courses. Time to time oil/gas field visits for up-to-date practical knowledge is the key feature of the institution. Well-equipped and modern laboratories have been established to cover the practical aspect of the reservoir analysis, refinery process and fluid properties. Students are facilitated with a modern and updated computer laboratory where student can work on their projects, assignments and access the Internet facilities. Institute also offers summer vacation Internship to final year students with the coordination of oil/gas producing companies/industries. The summer vacation internship enhances the knowledge of students on day-to-day field operation and working environment of the petroleum industry. In the final year the students are assigned to work on a project (dissertation) on some practical aspect of oil and gas reservoir, production and processing. The project is usually designed and completed in collaboration with petroleum Industry.

A Student Chapter of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International “Mehran Student Chapter” has also been established at this Institute. The Chapter helps the students and up-date their knowledge on petroleum engineering by organizing short courses, seminars, technical sessions, field trips and also establish a liaison with all the major national and multinational companies in the petroleum sector of Pakistan.
