countriessuch as South Korea and Thailand. This
loss can be partly attributed to lack of adequately
trained manpower available in the country that
could properly study the situation and incorporate
way and means to improve the product and guarantee
quality. Keeping in view this need, the Department
of Textile Engineering was established in Mehran
University in 1993 and a Batch of 25 students
was admitted for a four-year degree program. This,
in fact, is the second department established
in the country after National College of Textiles
Engineering Faisalabad.
In general the curriculum of the “Bachelor of
Textile Engineering” includes relevant subjects
such as fibre science, yarn manufacturing, fabric
manufacturing, textile testing and quality control,
textile chemistry, pre-treatment, dyeing &
printing, finishing of textile product and textile
project planning. The four-year course also includes
completion of a project and dissertation in the
final year that is usually based on some practical
aspects of textile production & machines and
carried out in collaboration with a textile industry.
Lecturing of the subjects is adequately supported
by practical training within the Department. In
addition, students are sent to the various textile
mills throughout the Pakistan during Summer and
Winter vacations for internship so that they can
be acquainted with the actual field work.
The building of the Textile Engineering department
has been completed recently including the Spinning,
Weaving, Textile Testing & Quality Control,
Wet Processing and Software laboratories. All
Laboratories are equipped with the State-of-Art
equipment/machines exported from Switzerland,
Germany, Italy, Taiwan and China along with some
local equipment/machines. The full potentials
of the laboratories are used to impart practical
knowledge to the undergraduate students. The laboratories
are also being used by the teacher of this department
for research purposes.
In order to produce quality product of Pakistan,
