Procedure of Admission for the Degree of Master of Engineering (CSN & IT)

Minimum Requirements for the Degree

The academic program is conducted as full time in the evening. The full time evening programconsists of four semesters (1- l/2year) for course work and research including pre-course studies of 6 weeks (Zero Semesters). Each subject has been assigned a number of credit hours, which are relative measures of the workload on the student per subject. The minimum requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering in IT & Telecommunication field are course work of 30 credit hours and a thesis of 6 credit hours. Not more than 16 credit hours shall be taken up in one Term.

Duration of Studies and Research

The minimum period for completing the course work shall be four semesters (1-1/2 Academicyears) for a full time evening student, which includes the course work and research work. Aftersuccessful completion of the course work and meeting the requirements, the student will select his thesis topic in consultation with his advisor and submit the Research Proposal for Master of Engineering in prescribed Performa for the approval of Advanced Studies & Research Board. The minimum period for completing all the requirements of the degree of Master of Engineering shall be four semesters (1-1/2 academic year) for full time.

Transfer of Credits

Transfer of credits earned in other Institutions may be approved in individual case upto a maximum determined by the ASRB.

Registration

Each student is required to register him self at the University in the course work and the research separately in the field in which he takes courses, does research, and receives degree. Tuition and other fees must be paid at the time of registration.

Classes

The classes for M.E. course will commence when a substantial number of the candidates areenrolled. The maximum number of enrolments, in each field is limited to 20 (twenty). A student is expected to attend the classes regularly and is responsible for all assigned work whether present or absent. In case of absence from examination, his grade shall be zero in that examination, unless the Advisor concerned is satisfied with the reason for his absence and is willing to give a make examination.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Master’s degree Program, a student must possess First Class Bachelor’s degree in any field of. He is further required to be proficient in the use of English language, and be physically and mentally fit for the study. The candidates will have to appear & qualify the pre-admission test.

Procedure for Admissions

The applicant must submit the application form duly completed in all respects, along with the relevant documents by the last date fixed for this purpose. The student shall be registered for a full time evening program. A full time evening student if employed will submit a No Objection Certificate from his employer before registration stating that he would be permitted to attend the classes regularly and during the period of his studies he would be posted near Jamshoro. Incomplete application forms or applications not accompanied by relevant documents and / or processing fee, or applications received after the due date will not to be considered. Each application for admission will be processed separately by the Graduate Committee. The Committee reserve the right refuse admission to any applicant without assigning any reason, or cancel he admission of a student at any stage if his conduct or progress in studies is not found satisfactory. If any student is found to be deficient in the pre-requisite knowledge, he will be required to up date his knowledge for which extra classes may be arranged during the Zero Semester. The decision to direct a graduate student to take up an extra course to remove his deficiency in a particular field will be made by the Graduate Committee.
Each student shall complete to the satisfaction of the University the following minimum requirements for each course of study during the term.

  1. Class tests, Presentations and assignments as given by subject teacher.
  2. Final term Examination.
  3. 80% attendance

The details of marks shall be as under:

Any candidate, who secures minimum 50% marks in each course and not less than 60% aggregate marks in two terms may be allowed to register for the degree of Master of Engineering.After successful completion of the minimum requirements of course work, the student may berecommended by his advisor to’ proceed to work for M.E. degree. Each student shall be attached with an Advisor and if possible or convenient to co-advisor to assist him in matters related to his course work and to the choice of his research topic. The student shall have to give initial seminar on the selected topic of his ME Thesis which is judged & approved by the members of ASRB.

The final seminar & comprehensive examination shall be held after the student has submitted his draft M.E. thesis through his Supervisor. This examination will be oral.

  1. The report of the Supervisor, Internal Examiner and External Examiner appointed by the Advanced Studies and Research Board should be unanimous for the award of the degree. In case of difference of opinion the matter shall be referred to the Advanced Studies and Research Board for its consideration.
  2. If the examiners recommend that the student is successful at the comprehensive examination, he may be declared to have passed the Master of Engineering Degree examination. In case of failure, a second examination may be given on the recommendation of the examiners. No student will be permitted a third examination.

 

Procedure of Admission for the Degree of Master of Engineering (Telecom & Control Engineering, & EPE)

Minimum Requirements for the Degree

The academic program is conducted in morning and evening. The full time morning program for course work is of two terms (one year) plus a minimum of one term (six months) of research. The full time evening program consists of three terms (1½ Years) for course work plus minimum of two terms (One Year) for research. Each subject has been assigned a number of credit hours, which are relative measures of the workload on the student per subject. The minimum requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering in any field are course work of30 credit hours and a thesis. Not more than 16 credit hours shall be taken up in one Term.

After successful completion of the minimum requirements of course work, the student may be considered fit for the award of a Post-Graduate Diploma only or he may be recommended by his advisor to proceed to work for M.E. degree. In case a student is not able to complete the course work required for the M.E. degreeor for award of Post-Graduate Diploma, he may be awarded a Certificate forsuccessful completion of each course. The final comprehensive examination shall be held after the student has submitted his M.E. thesis through his Supervisor. This examination may be oral or both written and oral as may be decided by the Examiners.

Any candidate, who secures minimum 50% marks in each course and not less than 60% aggregate marks in two terms may be allowed to register for the degree of Master of Engineering.Any candidate who does not qualify to register for the degree of Master of Engineeringbut secures not less than 40% marks in each course and not less than 50% aggregate marks in all subjects in two terms may be awarded the Post-Graduate Diploma.

Any candidate who does not qualify for award of Post Graduate diploma but secures at least 50% marks in any course and not less than 40% marks in all other subjects may be awarded Post-Graduate certificate for that/those course(s).

 

Regulations For M.Phil Leading To Ph.D Degree

PROGRAM Introduction

These Regulations shall apply to those postgraduates students, who want to register initially for a M.Phil degree program and later on, transfer to Ph.D degree program. This program of studies and research shall be called M.Phil, leading to Ph.D degree program and shall be fulltime program.

Eligibility

To be eligible for registration for M.Phil leading to Ph.D degree program, a student must possess first class Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of engineering from Mehran University or any other university recognized by Mehran University for this purpose, and be proficient in English Language.

Registration

A student desiring to enroll for this program shall apply for registration and proceed to complete all the formalities required.

M.Phil. Research Work

After completing all the formalities for registration, including initial seminar, the student shall proceed with his research work under the guidance of his Supervisor in accordance with the approved Regulations for the M.Phil. degree program, and deliver intermediate seminars and submit progress reports as required by the Advanced Studies & Research Board (ASRB).

 

Transfer to Ph .D Degree Program

Supervisor’s Consent

After carrying out research for about two years after registration, a student desiring to transfer to Ph.D. program shall approach his Supervisor to seek his consent for changing his registration from M.Phil to Ph.D. program. If the Supervisor is convinced that the research work done by the student shows potential for extending it to the Ph.D. degree level, he may advise the student to apply for change of registration for transfer to the Ph.D. degree program otherwise the student shall have tocontinue his research work for getting M.Phil degree.

Application

The student shall apply for change of registration from M.Phil. to Ph.D. Program on the prescribed form, pay the processing fee and resubmit his research proposal for Ph.D. degree along with a detailed report of the research work already done by him, through his supervisor to the Director of postgraduate studies or the Director of the concerned Institute, as the case may be, who will in turn submit the same to the Advanced & Studies Research Board for evaluation and approval.

Evaluation of Research Work

The report of the research work done by the student will be considered by the ASRB and will also be sent to a prospective external examiner outside Pakistan for evaluation with regard to its originality and scope for continuation for Ph.D. degree. The student shall also deliver a seminar on his research work. If a favourable report is received from the external examiner, the student will be allowed by the ASRB to continue his research work for Ph.D. degree. However, if the research work is not considered by the external examiner to be fit for its continuation for Ph.D. degree, the student shall have to complete the research work and submit his thesis for M.Phil degree.

Other Formalities

After approval of the Advanced Studies Research Board, the student must complete all the other formalities required for a Ph.D. student, including payment of the required fee etc, as per the approved Regulations for Ph.D. degree program.

Ph.D. Research Work

The student shall continue with his research work diligently and regularly, submit progress reports and deliver seminars as required under the approved Regulations for the Ph.D. degree program.

Course Work

Considering the background of the student vis-a-vis the field of his research work, the student’s Supervisor may recommend to the ASRB through the Director of post-graduate studies, or the Director of the concerned Institute, where the student is registered, that the student must study some post-graduate courses to strengthen his knowledge of the field of research work and to enable him to carry out research properly, if the ASRB approves the supervisor’s recommendation, the student shall have to study the courses and pass the examinations with at least C grade (50% marks) in each course, whenever these courses are offered in the University. For this purpose, the student shall have to pay extra tuition fees as approved by the ASRB.

Duration for the Program

  1. Minimum Duration
    The minimum duration for completing all the requirements for the full time (day time) M.Phil leading to Ph.D. degree program shall be four years.
  2. Maximum Duration
    The maximum duration for completing all the requirements for the M.Phil leading to Ph.D. degree program will be determined by the ASRB for each individual student considering all the relevant circumstances as well as the recommendation of the student’s Supervisors.

Other Regulations

All other regulations for the approved Ph.D. degree program, such as payment/refund of various fees, approval/change of thesis topic, delivery of seminars, submission of progress reports, leave of absence, no objection certificate/study leave from employer, preparation and evaluation of thesis, conduct of thesis examination, declaration of result, award of degree etc. shall also apply to the M.Phil-leading to Ph.D. degree program.

Amendment to Regulations

These Regulations may be amended from time to time as deemed fit by the authorities of theMehran University of Engineering & Technology, and, unless specifically stated otherwise, the amended Regulations shall apply to the already registered students as well as to the new students.
NOTE: The courses of 4 credit hours will be of 100 marks and courses of 2 credit hours will be of 50 marks.

General Facilities

  1. Computers
    The Main Computer Center as well as all the Departments/ Institutes of University have adequate number of latest high speed Pentium III PC’s in addition to latest Laser Printers and Scanner facilities. University teaches high-level languages such as Object Oriented C++, Java and etc which can be used to solve the engineering problems. To represent/analyze scientific and engineering data and catering to the requirements of various research conducted in the University various graphical software's are also available such as Mathematics, Grapher, Mat-lab, Surfer,etc.
  2. Library
    The central library of the University contains more than 80,000 books related to engineering technology, and science. Many journals on various subjects related to engineering and technology are currently being subscribed from Pakistan, U.S.A, U.K. and many other countries. Library has subscription to Science & Technology database of over 400 Journals. Many articles on the database are available in full text image format. There are more than 15,000 (approx.) textbooks in the Book Bank, are loaned to the students for one term on nominal rent. The collection of books is updated continuously and new books are acquired on recommendation of experienced faculty members, which makes collection most suited and beneficial. In addition, latest reference and other books are also acquired every year to keep the users of the library abreast with the latest information on Science & Technology, especially engineering and its allied subjects. It contributes effectively to the related activities of postgraduate teaching and research consultancy and research and development.
    In addition to providing the readers with in-house collection, services are also provided for inter-library loan and photocopying of literature including technical articles from other national and international libraries. Literature search services are also provided on request in co-operation with technical information centers within and out side Pakistan. This service is further enhanced by cooperation among Muslim countries under COMSTECH.
    A CD-ROM database has been subscribed by the library, which is updated every month. About 400 journals concerning various aspects of Applied Science & Technology are abstracted on this database and most of the articles are available in full image form. A CD-ROM library is also being developed for the use of students and faculty members. Students and faculty members are also provided with Internet facility. Some on-line searching can also be arranged. Students are encouraged to use computer for their project work for which PCs are installed in the Internet section of the library. The collection for books is computerized and subject bibliographies can be produced on request. The library is heavily used by the students, faculty members and researchers and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. throughout the year with professional staff available at service points to meet needs of the readers. Besides the Central library, individual departments/Institutes have established their own seminar libraries, which cater to the specific needs of the departments/Institutes. Union catalog of Books available on campus is also functional. Library is connected to some departments/Institutes through Local Area, Network (LAN) which can be use the library resources from their own departments/Institutes. Such services will be accessible to all departments/institutes on campus when fiber optics cable is laid.
  3. Seminar Hall & Auditorium
    The Directorate as well as Institutes use Prof. Makhdoom Muhammad Dawood Seminar Hall of the University when needed. The hall has a seating capacity of 100 persons. It is equipped with audio-visual facilities. In addition to this, University has an Auditorium facility fully equipped with modern means to be used for convocations, large-scale seminars and conferences, etc. This Auditorium has a seating capacity of 700 persons.
  4. Transport
    The transport facility is available from Hyderabad city center and the University campus for the benefit of both the staff as well as students. However, student has to pay normal charges.
  5. Financial Support
    Twelve numbers of stipends are available for award to the outstanding students as per following rules:
    1. Throughout first division.
    2. Those who have secured highest marks in the entry test.
      1. For ME/M.Phil Program
      2. He will be paid stipend of Rs. 12,000/- plus Rs. 3000/- as tuition fees p.m.

      3. For Ph.D. Program
      4. He will be paid stipend of Rs. 18,000/- plus Rs. 5000/- as a tuition fees p.m.

    Other Facilities

    In case any equipment other than the available is required by the student, it will be made available free of cost with the permissible limit. Books & Journals: In case any special book or journal is needed by the students other than available in the Library, it will be provided free of cost with the permissible limit. One time award of Rs. 15,000/- for publishing of research will be given with the permissible limits subject to having its minimum impact factor 0.5. Traveling expenses will be paid with its permissible limits to attend the Workshops, Seminars, and Data collections. All the spares/maintenance/consumable for accessories for supporting the R&D activities envisage in the research project will be made available free of cost within the permissible limits.

    Hostel Accommodation

    The University may provide hostel accommodation to the full time deserving students. The other students are advised to arrange for their own accommodation at Hyderabad City or Jamshoro.

    Tuition Fees and Deposits

    1. Tuition and Other Fees
      Students seeking admission are required to pay the fees and deposits as per Table 1 at the time of admission and registration. The fees and deposit shown are to be paid in Pak. Rupees.
    2. Refunds
      All fees paid are non-refundable except library and caution money deposits, which will be refunded one month after the student leave the university.
