  • Challenges and Opportunities of Recycling Wastes in Pakistan

Institute of Environmental Engineering & Management, Mehran UET, Jamshoro organized a-day seminar on “Challenges and opportunities of Recycling Wastes in Pakistan”, at Seminar Hall, IEEM, Mehran UET, Jamshoro. Dr. Abdul Fatah Soomro, Assistant Professor in Energy and Environmental Engineering Department, DUET, Karachi was the speaker of the seminar.
Mr. Soomro shared that Pakistan is one of the fifth largest countries by population with a high growth rate (2.08 %) and urbanization country in south Asia. It leads to an ultimate increase in solid waste; Pakistan generates approximately 49.6 million tons of solid waste a year, which has been increasing by more than 2.4 percent annually. Recycling waste is the second most major component in the typical composition of municipal solid waste (MSW), around 24%, followed by the organic portion; the dominant component of recycled waste are Plastic, Rubber, metals, Textile, E-waste, and paper waste. Recycling waste material has a great potential to save a virgin raw material that's ultimately drastically reducing GHG, carbon footprint, and GDP and simultaneously creating new jobs, increasing the economy. Recycling waste can open new doors for indigenous research. He said Recycling waste is a way toward shifting from a linear to a circular economy model. Pakistan lacks waste management infrastructure, creating serious environmental problems. One of the biggest challenges is the unavailability of data for recycling waste. It might be due to Pakistan's lack of a formal recycling unit. The most common waste collection practice is a mixed waste collection system (single bin). About 60-70 percent of solid waste in the cities is collected. Recycling and reuse create at least 20-30 times more jobs than the simple disposal of waste through landfills and incinerators. Faculty members, Student and staff actively participated the seminar.

Currently Pakistan produces around 48.5 million tones with less than 50% of collection each day and this would be increased by increasing population & urbanization. Many of countries around the globe have a much-engineered mechanism of solid waste utilization and adopted well Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) approach and getting the good out of it. Pakistan can harness the alternative sources by abolishing the conventional approach of open dumping and Landfilling. This could be possible when solid waste is managed by well-equipped system of management and the system should include fundamentals of ISWM model i.e. policies, selection of technologies, and social awareness programs.Dr. Korai concluded that the ISWM is one of the best approaches to extract energy from solid waste in the country.
