Remarkable Achievement of MUETians at 26th IEEEP Student Seminar

The 26th IEEEP Student Seminar held on 03rd March 2011, organized by IEEEP in collaboration with Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC)-National university of Sciences & Technology (NUST), seemed to be the event of innovations and ideas in the field of Engineering. Young talents coming forward from different Universities across Pakistan united at PNEC-NUST, not only presented their research papers, but also helped to motivate and encourage others students to come forward and find best in themselves.

Determination and hard work leads to success eventually, and this is what we observe each time when the students of MUET with their fervor and dedication accomplish great victories showing “WE are worth it”. Students of Mehran University once again proved themselves by prevailing two positions (1ST and 5TH) in the competition of IEEEP Student seminar.

The author and participant students from ES, TL and EL department of MUET accompanied by the teachers and supervisors Ms Attiya Baqai (ES), Ms Mehnazar (ES), Ms Maria Jan (ES) and Dr Fahim Aziz Umrani (TL) attended the seminar. Technical papers were received from different universities like MUET, NUST, NU-FAST, Punjab University, Quaid-e-Awam University, SZABIST, IBA, SSUET, PAK-KIET, LUMS, Bahria University, Hamdard University, Usman Institute of Technology, Pakistan Navy Engineering College, Islamic University Bahawalpur and many others.

The Seminar presented 30 short listed papers, among which students from MUET claim the largest share of research papers i.e. in total 10 papers were selected from MUET from which 5 were from ES dept, 3 from TL dept and 2 from EL dept. IEEEP announced, ranked and honored 6 POSITIONS among these 30 papers.  

1ST POSITION, Gold Medals, 20,000 /Rs cash prize and certificates were won by Syed Asad Ali (07TL114), Fahad (07TL22) and Mansoor (07TL39) from the Department of Telecommunication Engineering, MUET. Their paper was entitled as “Bit Error Rate Analysis of Amplify & Forward Cooperative Communication Protocol”under the supervision and guidance of Engr Naveed Umrani, Engr Zafi Shah, Dr. Fahim Aziz Umrani. Whereas 5thTH POSITION, Silver medals, 3000/Rs cash prize and certificates were awarded to Adil Khan (08ES76) & Shahzad Awan (08ES63) from the Department of Electronics Engineering, MUET under the supervision and assistance of Engr Attiya Baqai and Engr Khuhed Memon. The paper is named as Real time EEG Based Gesture Recognition System for Paralyzed Patients.

The event was eagerly covered by local and national print/electronic media such as CITY FM89 and Dawn News, the Media partners, Radio partners, CIO Pakistan & PC world as technical media partners. The chief guest of the closing ceremony Mr Asad S. Jaffar, chairman & CEO (Phillips Electrical industries of Pakistan Ltd), distributed the appreciation certificates among the participants of the seminar.

The winning participants along with their supervisors were invited to attend IEEEP Multi topic Symposium held on 16th and 17th March, 2011 at PC Hotel in Karachi, where they were awarded Cash prizes, Gold and silver medals, shields and certificates. The former Federal Minister of Science & technology Prof Dr Atta-Ur-Rahman was the chief guest.
